AMY, 26, HAD been deaf since birth. She had never heard any sound – not her six-year-old son’s voice, nor those of her parents.
This was the moment her cochlear implant was activated and she heard sounds for the first time.
It begins around the 30-second mark. You may find somebody begins chopping onions shortly thereafter.
Amy’s aunt Catherine writes:
[Amy] is continuing her hard work of speech and sound therapy to distinguish what sound is. Her pronunciation has improved vastly and she can hear words and especially music! [...] Every day is new and sometimes an exhausting experience.
