Why on earth would a Muslim be writing about Jesus?

One Fox News anchor couldn’t seem to get her head around it.

AUTHOR REZA ASLAN struggled a little with making his profession clear when he appeared on the Fox News show Spirited Debate recently.

The author has penned a new book about the history of Jesus, called ‘Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth’… meanwhile, he’s a Muslim.

Fox News anchor Lauren Green began the interview by asking why on earth a Muslim would have any interest in writing about Christianity

Aslan had a pretty rock solid answer:

I am a scholar of religions with four degrees, including one in the New Testament and fluency in biblical Greek, who has been studying the origins of Christianity for two decades, who also just happens to be a Muslim. So it’s not that I’m just some Muslim writing about Jesus. I am an expert with a PhD in the history of religions.

But Green pressed on:

It still begs the question though, why would you be interested in the founder of Christianity?

Does it though, does it beg the question?

Aslan thinks not, so he spells it out…

The Atlantic points out that even though the interviewer even accuses Aslan of hiding his religion, it’s still good news for him and sales of his book, while Slate called it “the single most cringe-worthy, embarrassing interview broadcast on Fox News”.
