FOR MOST PEOPLE, there’s probably only one member of Destiny’s Child that crosses their mind on a weekly basis, and it’s not Kelly Rowland. Which is a real shame, to be honest.
Kelly Rowland’s work in Destiny’s Child was certainly commendable, and her solo career brought us a couple of genuine bangers (see: Like This feat. Eve, and Work), as well as some slower tunes that really appealed to our melodramatic 8-year-old selves who loved taking out the family’s camcorder to make awful homemade music videos (see: Stole and Dilemma).
The latter of the two songs is one that has remained in the internet’s consciousness for a very strange (but funny) reason. (It also doesn’t seem to get any less hilarious as time goes by).
As you may or may not remember, there’s a scene in the music video for Dilemma in which Kelly Rowland gets angry and throws her phone away because her boyfriend is ignoring her texts – which she had attempted to send to him on Microsoft Excel.

Back in 2016, Nelly, who collaborated with Kelly Rowland on the song and played her love interest in the music video, tried to explain what was going on there. He said:
That was the thing at the time. That was the new technology at the time. It looks a little dated now, I can see that.
But the thing is… That was not the ‘thing’ at the time. You could never text somebody on Microsoft Excel. Nelly clearly never did his ECDL in transition year. It’s been seventeen years since the song was released in 2002, and it took until February 2019 for Kelly Rowland to break her silence on the situation.
When she went on The Real, a chat-show hosted by Jeannie Mai, the singer was asked to explain herself. Kelly simply replied:
Here’s the sitch, okay? I don’t know what that is! I don’t know what Microsoft Excel is. I don’t know. I don’t have a clue. So, when I saw all these memes… I was like, “I don’t care!”

At this point, Twitter users realised that there are some people out there who are so rich that they’re lucky enough to have never laid eyes on a spreadsheet. It’s not just your mam who hasn’t got a clue what Microsoft Excel is.
It’s probably not very often that the person who runs the Microsoft Excel Twitter account gets an opportunity to have a moment in the spotlight like this, so they swiftly jumped on it and tweeted Kelly Rowland some of her own lyrics.
It doesn’t look like we can expect a weird partnership between Kelly Rowland and Excel any time soon.
