The Fall pips Love/Hate to the post at the IFTAs

Leading man Jamie Dornan was named Best Actor and Rising Star.

LOVE/HATE’S IFTA dominance came to an end last night as RTÉ/BBC co-production The Fall walked away with Best TV Drama.

The gangland drama has a reputation for sweeping the board at the ceremony but 2014 just wasn’t to be its year.

Tom Vaughan-Lawlor’s Nidge surrendered his Best Actor crown to The Fall’s Jamie Dornan, who was also named this year’s Rising Star.

Meanwhile Amber’s Eva Birthistle trumped Love/Hate ladies Charlie Murphy and Mary Murray in the Best TV Actress category.

Love/Hate still took home two awards though: Peter Coonan was named Best Supporting Actor while writer Stuart Carolan was again honoured with the award for Best Script.

Other TV winners included Moone Boy – which pipped Mrs Brown’s Boys to the post in the Entertainment category for a second year running – RTÉ’s Operation Transformation, and creche expose Breach of Trust which was named Best News and Current Affairs programme.

Nods in the supporting categories went to Sinead Cusack for The Sea and audience favourite Michael Fassbender for his Oscar-nominated performance in 12 Years A Slave.

Steve Coogan and Philomena Lee received a standing ovation as they took to the stage to collect the Best International Film award for Philomena. Judi Dench was named Best International Actress for her portrayal of the Limerick woman.
