IN IRELAND, TIPPING can feel like an absolute minefield.
What percentage should you leave in a restaurant? Does the rule still apply if the food was rank? And what about hairstylists, taxi drivers and nail technicians?
In America, the situation is a little more cut and dry, however, with general consensus agreeing that between 15 and 20 per cent is an appropriate amount to leave your server.
And that’s why Jay-Z has earned himself a reputation as a bit of a tight-arse this week.
While wining and dining with friends in New York, the Grammy Award-winning rapper splashed out more than $91,000 on champagne in a nightclub called Playhouse.
In other words, Jay spent almost €74,000 on jumped-up Prosecco.
And he tipped his server $11,100 – a little shy of €9,000.
As Irish people, we obviously began slobbering on ourselves at the thought of such a mammoth tip, but it seems folk across the water were quick to spot a discrepancy in Jay’s calculations.
As that figure equates with just 12% of the total bill, Twitter was quick to call him out on it.
No, seriously; look at this.
We’d like the record to state that if Jay-Z ever wants to give us $11,000, we’d happily accept.
