With that in mind, credit where credit’s due to Jimmy Fallon, who performed Fairytale of New York this week in an accent not wholly dissimilar to the man who made it famous, Shane McGowan.
Talk about playing with fire; an Irish accent and one of the nation’s most beloved songs.
Appearing on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in recent days, Saoirse Ronan joined the host in performing a track that has been known to bring a tear to a glass eye over many a festive season.
And we’ll be honest, we were nervous.
Notwithstanding our concern over bogey Irish accents, Saoirse’s dubious Aer Lingus skit on Saturday Night Live was still painfully clear in our minds, so our breath was bated as we watched the pair segue into the rendition with talk of pub lock-ins and Irish sing-songs.
Thankfully, they pulled it off, with extra credit going to Jimmy for obvious reasons.
