REMEMBER WHEN MTV was all about the music?
Then remember when they started slowly introducing shows like The Real World, Daria and Made?
Oh, and then remember when they forgot music ever existed, and instead focussed all their attention on teenage pregnancy and LA drama?
Well, as far as we’re concerned, MTV’s heyday was when they struck a perfect balance between the tunes and the TV shows.
If you’re with us on that one then you’ll be only bloody thrilled to know that the music channel is launching MTV studios, which will be dedicated to the development and production of revivals and reboots.
According to Deadline, the agenda includes a re-imagining of Daria, an update on Made and the return of The Real World – one of the first reality TV shows we ever clapped eyes on.
These throwbacks will be accompanied by the launch of two new reality series The Valley (working title) and Straight Up Ghosted, with inspiration taken from The Hills and Catfish.
But enough about them; back to the matter at hand.
The Real World and Daria & Jodie are currently being pitched to streaming platforms including Hulu, Netflix and Apple.
Commenting on this approach, MTV president Chris McCarthy said the Real World will work better on SVOD (Streaming/ Subscription Video on Demand).
You have a whole different generation of young people that are growing up that didn’t experience cable in the way you and I did. And so we’re able to go and actually retell that story, updated of course, with new characters, new tensions, new real-life issues, but still stay totally pure to the clean idea of what Real World was without having to basterdize it in order to make it work for traditional cable.
And as for Daria? Same deal.
It’s better served for us to bring that out and look to partner with a SVOD (platform) because it’s where the audience is looking for that type of scripted [show].
Lads, we’re buzzing.
