Orange is the New Black is officially not a comedy anymore

So says the Emmys.

NETFLIX SERIES ORANGE is the New Black is one of the most popular and acclaimed television shows around at the moment.

We love it here at DailyEdge.ie.

Despite being set in a women’s prison, the programme has successfully managed to wring moments of hilarity from otherwise grim scenarios.

However, the Television Academy has now officially ruled that it is not a comedy and will not be eligible to compete in the comedy categories at this year’s Emmy Awards.

Orange is the New Black was previously nominated for twelve Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

This year, however, it will be forced to compete alongside the likes of House of Cards, Mad Men and Homeland in the drama categories.

The move comes after the Television Academy redefined what constitutes a comedy and a drama. Half-hour shows now compete in the comedy categories, while hour-long shows have to compete within the drama categories.

A number of programmes that straddle the line between drama and comedy, including Glee, Shameless and Jane The Virgin, all successfully petitioned the Academy to be allowed compete as comedies.

And while Orange is the New Black also appealed, its petition was turned down.

Many have welcomed the decision.

But it has also caused some furrowed eyebrows.

This is not the first time that such shows have come under scrutiny.

Many have previously stated that “dramedies” like Girls and Nurse Jackie shouldn’t be considered in the same categories as the likes of Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory.

But what do you think — is Orange is the New Black funny?
