first dates irl

Philly from Tallafornia's return to First Dates ended with the biggest plot twist ever

Pardon?!

FIRST DATES IRELAND continued this week, with more singletons on the look out for luuuuuuuurve.

This week, Cupid paired up Julie and Matthew who shared more awkward silences than a congregation at a funeral mass.

Julie answered fairly succinctly when queried by producers about whether she felt a spark:

No, no, no.”

Poor Matthew, in fairness:

Just say ‘no’ once, be alright.”

BRB, shrieking into a pillow.

Thankfully, Aleks and Gary had more success on their date. That said, it helped that they’d actually scored each other before.

It probably made that onscreen shift even easier.

Elsewhere,

Then, there was Philly and Rachel.

Not just any fine Philly though – Philly better known for his role in cult Irish reality TV series, ‘Tallafornia’.

Back to redeem himself after last year’s, eh, unsuccessful pairing, the nation collectively thought, “sure, it can’t be as bad as last time, can it?” (A refresher for you – he turned up hungover and asked his date whether she’d had a boob job, as she looked like she had a “perky set of tits” on her.)

Initially, it looked as though Philly had found his match in Rachel this time around. Rachel believed in second chances (to a point)! She was looking for someone to go to Ibiza for her!

And yet, what started off as a pretty reasonable evening ended with Philly falling at the final hurdle.

You know when you think you’ve gotten away with something and you start to let your guard down? Yeah.

Philly wouldn’t let her pay because of the long journey she’d made – pity he couldn’t remember from where though.

Ah listen, easy mistake, and it’s not as if she’d already told twice. It’s not as if there were several references made to Wexford strawberries. What fruit is Carlow known for anyway?!

Rachel has big plans for 2020 anyway. No fear on her.

And by the looks of things, Philly will be busy as well as he gets to grips …

… With fatherhood?!

Yep, despite Philly taking a trip down the so-called “rejection lift”, he found love in his ex-girlfriend Laura after the show. They’re welcoming their first child later this year.

The addendum certainly shook up viewers.

Hopefully, it all works out and Mateo never sees him darken the door of the Gibson again.
