BACK IN 2015, one of the most memorable and heartbreaking campaigns in the lead up to the marriage equality referendum was the #RingYourGranny initiative.
It involved calling up your older relatives to have a chat about how they will vote, and recording the results to inspire others.
YouTubers began the movement and it was taken on by countless others under the #RingYourGranny hashtag.
Today in Australia, postal votes are being sent out to take a non-binding national poll on same sex marriage – and in the past week a #RingYourGranny campaign has been launched by the Australian Marriage Equality group.
It’s called #RingYourRellos and it’s just as tough a watch as the Irish version – the first of which has gone viral in the run-up to the vote
A second video – this time featuring a group – was released over the weekend and it’s touched so many as well
A recent poll puts the pro-marriage equality side at 70% in the country.
The #RingYourRellos videos have inspired others to reach out by text ahead of the surveys landing
“You know that I am on your side always + forever”
The purpose of the vote is “to gauge support for changing Australia’s Marriage Act”, and a result is expected in November.
