CELEBS ARE good at lots of things – acting, singing, looking good, etc – but upholding the ~*sanctity of marriage*~ is not one of them. But we love them for it anyway.
1. Britney Spears and Kevin Federline
2004 was a wild year for Britney. She married her childhood friend Jason Alexander for all of 55 hours in January, then got hitched to backing dancer Kevin Federline in September.
The wedding was a surprise to the guests, who initially thought the event was an engagement party – the bridesmaids wore customised Juicy Couture tracksuits. So 2004.
The couple had two sons and a reality show (Chaotic) together, then split in 2006. Federline subsequently tried to launch a rap career. Britney is obviously still an icon.
2. Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley
This probably wouldn’t have been that weird, only Nicolas Cage is famously a huge fan of Lisa Marie’s dad, Elvis. Amazingly, that didn’t make her run for the hills.
They married in August 2002 – and Cage filed for divorce three months later. *insert Heartbreak Hotel joke here*
3. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley
Lisa Marie strikes again! She originally met Michael when they were both teenagers, but they reconnected as adults, talking often on the phone. They married in 1994, making their first public appearance together at the MTV Video Music Awards:
Totally natural and unstaged! In 1996 Lisa Marie filed for divorce, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’, but the pair remained friends for some time after that.
4. Drew Barrymore and Tom Green
Yeah, Tom Green of “My bum is on the rail” fame. The pair was married for nine months in 2001 and starred in the cinematic masterpiece Freddy Got Fingered together. Love’s young dream.
5. Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman
These two met on the set of Scary Movie in 1998, married in Las Vegas after an all-night bender, then got an annulment after nine days.
Carmen went on to star in such films as Oy Vey! My Son is Gay! and 2-Headed Shark Attack, while Dennis Rodman is great pals with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Cool.
6. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries
Not the weirdest pairing of the list, but the circumstances are certainly exceptional- Kim and basketball player Kris didn’t spend more than a full week together before the marriage, got engaged and hitched within 90 days, then ended the whole thing after 72 days. Amazing.
7. Katy Perry and Russell Brand
This is one of the more recent ones, and we’re still like “Wait, that happened?” Katy and Russell got hitched in 2010 in a Hindu ceremony in India, and a year later Brand texted her - texted her - to ask for a divorce.
The breakdown of the marriage is key part of Katy’s documentary Part Of Me, and it’s just a bit heart-wrenching (it’s on Netflix and it’s actually very good. Watch it).
8. Renée Zellweger and country singer Kenny Chesney
Renée Zellweger is an Oscar-winning actress. Kenny Chesney is best known for a song called She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy. In 2005, they suddenly tied the knot after four months of dating, then split after another four months.
Renée cited ‘fraud’ as the reason for the annulment, and later called the marriage “the biggest personal mistake of my life”. Yeow!
