WITH THE GOLDEN Globes coming up this Sunday night, the international interest in Saoirse Ronan is hitting a peak.

And yesterday a Sky News reporter got into a bit of bother by saying that Saoirse is “one of our own” on air:

There was, of course, confusion and consternation across Ireland.

Richard Suchet is the Sky News presenter in question – and when RTÉ did a story about his comments, he responded

And RTÉ said they were happy for the support, but that she is still Irish

Richard really stuck to his guns though, saying it’s a compliment

And when others asked what he was thinking

Suchet explained that it was meant in a good spirit

And he gave a link to the difference between the UK, Britain and the British Isles

Overnight, the reaction from many Irish people has been of collective faceplam

The support is welcomed by everyone, but just not the rest of it

This saga must be laid to rest soon, the Irish people have spoken

For one last time…
