6 videos that perfectly sum up a 1980s Irish childhood

Disco dancing, sharp fashions and meeting local politicians. (Warning: Includes a young Brian Cowen)

AH, THE 1980s. A more innocent time. A time of mullets; of growing pains; and of sharp, sharp fashions.

And nowhere were the fashions sharper, the pains more painful, or the mullets, er, mulletier than in small-town Ireland.

Do you remember? Allow us to refresh your memory. Let’s take you on a voyage to a small Midlands town in the 1980s.

The tour starts at…

1. The local disco

It’s murder on the dancefloor. And by ‘murder’ we mean ‘death by line-dancing accident’.

2. Sporting glory

Also known as ‘two young fellas beating the heads off each other’.

3. Meeting local politicians

Is that the young, fresh-faced Brian Cowen on the canvass around the six-minute mark (and elsewhere)? Yes. Yes, it is.

Fairly overshadowed by the sunglasses on his assistant. They call him “Magnum Force”.

And did we mention the mobile phone around 9.05?

4. The St Patrick’s Day parade

Featuring men sawing wood. It’s what St Patrick would have wanted.

5. The talent show

OK, this happened in 1991. But the talent show never changes. It’s a wonder these people never attained pop stardom.

Also, could the camera please be a little closer to their faces?

6. Emigration from Shannon

Remember when you could go outside at an airport and watch d’aeroplanes?

And when everyone was leaving to live in other countries? Oh, wait…
