7 reasons why Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be the best thing about the Golden Globes

Amy Poehler. Tina Fey. Tonight. I want to go to there.

IS IT WRONG that we’re slightly more excited about the presenters than about the actual awards at tonight’s Golden Globes?

Yes, it’s one of the most open awards ceremonies of recent years with Lincoln, Argo and Django Unchained all vying for the major prizes. But really, we’re going to be watching for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Comedians, actresses, writers, and best friends, the two met at an improvisation class in Chicago twenty years ago and between them, have produced some of the most consistently funny moments in American comedy over the past decade.

Here’s why they’re likely to be the best thing about the Golden Globes.

1. Because they’re funny. ACTUALLY funny, not just ‘awards show presenter’ funny.

Tina Fey is the creator and star of 30 Rock while Amy Poehler is behind Parks and Recreation, two of the funniest tv programmes around and several notches above the usual bog standard network sitcom.

2. They’re actually friends

Unlike some of the more awkward award presenting collaborations of recent times (Yes, Anne Hathaway and James Franco at the Oscars, we’re looking at you), Tina and Amy are actual friends. They banter. They talk over each other. Someone once paid $36,000 just to get to hang out with them for an evening. Tina Fey tells this anecdote from her memoir ‘Bossypants’ about how she realised she and Amy were going to be really good friends after Amy yelled at Jimmy Fallon on the set of Saturday Night Live after he gave out to her for cursing and not being cute.

With that exchange, a cosmic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasn’t there to be cute.  She wasn’t there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys’ scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you like it.

I was so happy. Weirdly, I remember thinking, “My friend is here! My friend is here!” Even though things had been going great for me at the show, with Amy there, I felt less alone.

3. They know exactly why they’ve been hired for the Golden Globes

“We’ve been to them before and it’s a very kind of sloppy, loud party, and that seemed like our kind of thing”

4. Because Tina Fey can photobomb an awards ceremony like no-one else.

5. Because as well as presenting, they’re also both nominated for an award.

They’re both nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical for their roles in 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation. But even if they don’t win – they’re up against Lena Dunham for Girls, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep and Zooey Deshanel for New Girl – or if one beats the other, we know they’ll be cool with it. Just cos.

6. Because MEAN GIRLS

7. Because Tina Fey got Jon Hamm to do this on 30 Rock:
