BRITISH PUB CHAIN JD Wetherspoon has released a full list of prices for its Irish pubs, and they’re every bit as competitive as expected.
Back in July Wetherspoon’s opened its first Irish outlet, the Three Tun Tavern, on the site of the old Tonic Bar in Blackrock, Dublin.
There are two more Irish Wetherspoon’s on the way – the company has purchased the 40 Foot pub in Dun Laoghaire and the former Newport Café in Cork city.
There has been much talk of the cheap-and-cheerful prices, and the Three Tun Tavern has finally revealed a full price list on its Facebook page.
It’s extremely cheap.
Yes, you can believe your eyes – full pints of beers and ales for €2.95, stouts for €2.50 and glasses of wine for under €4.
Unsurprisingly, the prices have been welcomed by most punters:
However some are saying it signals the end of the Irish pub.
Chairman of JD Wetherspoon Tim Martin told DailyEdge.ie in July that he doesn’t think the “Wetherspoon’s revolution” heralds the end of the Irish pub, but may encourage competitive prices across the board.
I think that pressure will have to apply – between publicans, but also suppliers – if pubs are to thrive in the future. I don’t think that we’re just competing with other pubs; you’re also competing above all with supermarkets.
Are you tempted? Or is the local still king?
