IN THE WEEK that a former Fugee signalled his intentions to run for a forthcoming presidential election, TheJournal.ie takes a look at five other celebrity politicians – and what became of them.

  • Wyclef Jean

    Wyclef Jean is considering running for the presidency of Haiti, according to his family. In 2007, the Haitian-born musician was appointed as the country's ambassador-at-large.

  • Schwarzenegger

    Action star and former bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger is serving his second term as the governor of California, having been re-elected in 2006. Schwarzenegger, a Republican, is married to a member of the infamous Kennedy clan, Maria Shriver. (Shriver is JFK's niece.)

  • Entertainers Turned Politicians

    The late Sonny Bono, former husband of Cher, was elected as a Republican Congressman in 1994, but died suddenly in a skiing accident in 1998 before completing his term.

  • Lee

    Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny welcomed George Lee as he arrived at Leinster House the morning after winning the Dublin South by-election. Nine months later, Lee resigned his seat. He has since returned to RTÉ and presents a weekly radio business programme.

  • Reagan

    Former actor Ronald Reagan served as the 40th President of the United States, and held office from 1981 to 1989. He died in 2004, aged 93. Reagan consistently polls as one of the nation's favourite presidents.

  • Dana

    Ireland's first ever Eurovision Song Contest winner Dana, (aka Rosemary Scallon), lost out to Mary McAleese in the presidential election of 1997. Dana served as an MEP from 1999 to 2004. She failed to win a nomination for the last presidential election, but might just resurface for the next one.
