But wait, we hear you cry, haven’t women always been ridiculed for forgetting to shave? We didn’t imagine those headlines about ‘wardrobe malfunctions’ and the like, did we?
No, you didn’t. We all remember the absolute controversy when Julia Roberts stepped out (quite proudly) with pit hair at the Notting Hill premiere in 1999.
Pit hair has been common amongst us normal women for a while now, but celebrities have made it a bona fide trend. Of course.
Here’s a quick timeline of events.
March 2014: Madonna caused a ruckus with this Instagram post of her showing off some pit hair.
The Mirror in the UK sounded quite bemused by the whole incident, saying:
[Madonna] is not the only celebrity to show off her very own tuft of fluff for the world to see – the difference being, she actually intended for people to see it.
Imagine. All is quiet on the pit hair front for some time, until…
March 2015: The Only Way Is Essex’s Billi Mucklow is snapped by her footballer boyfriend Andy Carroll admiring her own pit hair. Go girl.
March 2015: Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s daughter Scout ‘flaunts’ some pit hair by the pool.
She also sported pit hair at an art show, leading the Daily Mail to comment on the “dark collection of fuzz poking out” of her dress.
April 2015: Miley Cyrus shows off pit hair that is not only long, but pink.
The Daily Mail seemed confused by her “somewhat bushy underarm region”.
May 2015: Girls creator Lena Dunham reveals that “grow armpit hair” is on her summer to-do list.
June 2015: Dunham’s co-star Jemima Kirke showed up at a fancy fashion event with a ballgown, pit hair, and supremely “DILLIGAF?” expression.
Though the tabloids had a field day, the shock was somewhat dialled down this time, and Jemima had the perfect response to any criticism:
