The Kildare lad from First Dates Ireland didn't actually go to Coppers after all

“I actually never went anywhere near Coppers.”

LAST NIGHT, FIRST Dates Ireland made its long-awaited debut.

The most talked about date of the night? That would be Darryl and Amy.

The pair seemed to get on like a house on fire during the date, but Darryl decided afterwards that they were better off staying friends and pretty much angered the whole nation.

And he didn’t exactly endear himself when he directed the taxi driver to take him to Coppers.

This afternoon, Darryl appeared on Newstalk’s Moncrieff to give his side of the story and shed a little light on why he declined to go on a second date with Amy.

Firstly, Darryl told Sean Moncrieff that he did initially fancy Amy and thought they might have a bit of potential…

To be honest with you, I thought she was very, very pretty, yeah. I said we’d see how it goes and see how we get on from here.

So what went wrong?

We had a very good laugh, we had great banter. She was a very fun girl and very intelligent. Personally after about 10 or 15 minutes, I knew she wasn’t what I was looking for. I didn’t want to be a dry shite and sit there for the whole date being rude or anything like that.

When asked about the atmosphere afterwards between himself and Amy, he replied that he could “feel aggression in the air” and described it as “tense”.

Eek.

Over the past 24 hours, Darryl has been on the receiving end of some fairly harsh tweets and he told Moncrieff that he didn’t really understand the reaction.

To be honest I can’t understand it because I was very polite throughout the date. I just didn’t feel attracted to the lady or I didn’t feel like it was going to go anywhere. Obviously maybe I should have told them I was going to marry her or something, I don’t know. I should have took out a ring maybe.

He also told Moncrieff that his poor Mam thought the reaction was “over the top”.

D’aw.

The most startling revelation of all, though? HE DIDN’T GO TO COPPERS.

What really happened there was I was told beforehand when I get into the taxi that I was only doing a u-turn in the car park and I had to go back in and shoot and record more stuff for the show. And I actually never went anywhere near Coppers.

The lesson here? Don’t believe everything you see on telly. (Still #TeamAmy, though.)
