WHEN MOST ACTORS discuss sex scenes, they usually describe them as being quite a breeze.
Even the most awkward sex scenes we see in movies are usually filmed in a cold, repetitive and boring manner that doesn’t phase the actors involved. Over the years, we’ve watched interviewers lean in, ready to get the goss on sex scenes, only to be told by the actor they’re chatting with that it’s as mundane as the interaction you have with the chap behind the till when you nip into Spar to get some milk.
When Jemima Kirke and her sister Lola went onto Busy Tonight (the talk-show hosted by Busy Phillips), the three of them sat around drinking cocktails (as guests often do on this show), and discussing the movie that the two sisters worked on together with Jamie Dornan and Billy Crystal, entitled Untogether.
Busy brought up the topic of Jemima’s sex scenes in the film.
Jemima, you play opposite Jamie Dornan and you had some like, hot f**king scenes with him. Was it intimidating to go into doing those scenes with Jamie Dornan?
Jemima, who’s pretty well-seasoned when it comes to sex scenes and on-screen nudity thanks to her tenure on Lena Dunham’s series Girls, said that working with Jamie Dornan was a totally different experience to anything she has done before. Struggling to hide how scarlet she was, she explained:
In terms of how he looks… I’ve never imagined… I’ve never been in that situation. Y’know, with someone – like I’ve never… That’s just… I’m not… I can’t… I’m not familiar with that… With someone who looks like that. It’s just, I really had to sort of put myself… I had to do a lot of work.
Stuttering her way through the question that she definitely should have expected, poor Jemima eventually settled on saying that it was so difficult because he “looks like a sculpture.” The actress said that one particular scene, in which Dornan was depicted performing oral sex on her character, seemed far too real for her. And then she remembered…
Of course. Fifty Shades. He knows what he’s doing. He was just really close.
Busy tried to cool the situation by turning to Jemima’s sister, Lola, and asking her about a sex scene she had during the movie. “And you had a very lovely scene with Billy Crystal? He seems lovely.”
