2017 TURNED OUT to be just as grim as we predicted it would be – a former reality star is the leader of the free world, Brexit is still woejus, Hollywood is a steaming pile of crap – but it hasn’t been all bad. Well it has, but these things were nice.

2. This Dublin granda who always cooks a birthday fry for his granddaughter
Ninety-year-old Dessie went viral in March after his granddaughter Oriel posted a picture of him frying up some birthday rashers to Reddit. She told DailyEdge.ie:
He goes out of his way to look after the six of us grandkids even though we are all in our 20s and 30s… I decided to post the photo to Reddit as I fully know how steeped in luck I am to still have him.

Since finding him injured on Abbey Street in September, Claire Kiely has been bringing the pigeon (called Pidge) to the vet, doing physio with him, and basically being the best pigeon mam you can possibly be.
Claire has set up an Instagram account for her unlikely pet, and told DailyEdge.ie that she wants to change people’s opinion on pigeons: “They’re so intelligent, beautiful and funny.”
7. Katie Taylor properly meeting a young fan she visited in hospital
Ella Sherlock first met Katie in August 2012, while she was in isolation following a bone marrow transplant – five years later, in November of this year, Ella is fully recovered, and they got to meet properly. Lovely.
