Everyone fell in love with the new Tommy Tiernan Show on RTÉ last night

“Calm down, it’s not Winning Streak lads”

IT’S NOT OFTEN that Ireland gets a new chat show – especially one hosted by a comedian – so there was a definite sense of anticipation for The Tommy Tiernan Show before it aired last night.

In an almost American late night TV-style intro, Tommy came on and basically did a bit of stand-up to get things going. His first line to a rapturous audience?

“Calm down, it’s not Winning Streak lads”

The unique format of the show dictated that Tommy and indeed the audience hadn’t a breeze who the guests were.

And the first one out was Aslan lead singer Christy Dignam

He talked about his current cancer treatments, and his previous addiction to heroin

In keeping with the general reaction to the show, the opening interview won praise for its pure honesty

Dignam finished the interview with an a cappella song and came back with a proper band at the end of the show.

The other two mystery guests were Vogue Williams (who Tommy didn’t recognise) and comedian Russell Howard

The quality of the guests alone was noteworthy

Along with Tiernan’s no-nonsense interview skills

The interviews were interspersed with sketches by Tiernan in a trio named The Gusset Brothers

It’s safe to say that the audience loved the format

Except the one guy who looked like he was counting the minutes until hometime

You know what you’re getting by having Tiernan as host – quality one-liners

Overall, a strong opening night by all accounts

And only one man could pull it off

It’s definitely not Winning Streak.
