AFTER EVERYTHING THAT she has been through, Britney Spears is one of those celebrities that you just genuinely want the best for. No matter what she does now, there are plenty of fans who will be happy as long as she’s happy.
Her last album, entitled Glory, wasn’t exactly packed with hits, but a lot of people were just pleased to see that she’s doing well enough to record an album.
Here are some reasons why Britney Spears is possibly the most iconic pop star of all time.
1. She was queen of the VMAs
Back in the early 2000s when the Video Music Awards were at their peak popularity, there was always one moment that stuck out. The most notable moments that people can remember now, almost certainly include Britney Spears.
Be it her kiss with Madonna, her performance with the snake or her unfortunate fall during ‘Gimme More’ in 2007, Britney always commanded the most attention at this event. She even got to present Michael Jackson with the Artist of the Millennium award in 2002.
2. The video for Baby One More Time inspired everyone to tie their shirt up like her
Man, woman or child; you cannot honestly say that you never tried tying your top up like that to be like Britney Spears. The same video probably put sales of chunky heels through the roof across the world too.
3. This really bizarre tweet she wrote
Nobody has any idea what she was talking about on the 10th of February 2011 when she posted this tweet. It doesn’t even necessarily seem like she’s saying global warming is good, but more like she wants to start a discussion on it. At least she doesn’t think it’s fake. Then there’s the two totally unrelated sentences that follow. Britney really is an enigma.
4. Crossroads
This classic film about three best friends who bury a time capsule and make a pact to open it at their high school graduation is extremely comforting. It also deals with issues like teen pregnancy and how sexual assault can affect working class women.
This part of the storyline focuses on Taryn Manning’s character. Taryn Manning is who we now recognize today as Pennsatucky from Orange Is The New Black. Her characters story in Crossroads is pretty similar to Pennsatucky’s in OITNB.
5. Her matching outfits with Justin Timberlake
If you’re going to be in a relationship with someone, why not just go all out and wear the same butt ugly outfit as them to an important event. They most likely got a good laugh out of this one at the time, but if not they’ve definitely saw the humour in it at some point over the sixteen years between this incident and today.
6. She was the youngest singer to ever get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Britney Spears was only 21-years-old when she received her very on slab on the walk of fame. Before her 21st birthday in 2003, Spears had already released albums that had comfortably gone 14x platinum.
She had released …Baby One More Time, Sometimes, Crazy, Lucky, Stronger, I’m A Slave 4 U, I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll and about 9 more huge hits between the age of sixteen and twenty-one. There’s no denying she worked very hard.
7. Even if people (still, to this day) maintain that Britney lip syncs live, she’s still a brilliant performer
Her dances are like a workout DVD. She just goes at it 100% for every song every time she plays live. It’s difficult just to watch her dance in restrictive low-waist jeans and heels so it’s probably unimaginably hard to actually do it in real life.
8. She almost ended up dating Prince William (things didn’t work out)
They had been emailing for a while and planned on meeting. However, he stood her up to go foxhunting. Typical. Definitely his loss.
9. She made some amazing appearances in TV shows that were popular at the start of the Millennium
Will & Grace, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Kenan & Kel, The Nick Cannon Show, Punk’d, The Simpsons and countless MTV productions. This only fueled Britney mania.
10. She had so many relationships that are really funny to look back on now
Colin Farrell. Enough said.
11. So many of her songs have been bangers. You could just stick on her Greatest Hits album, let it play out and make a club night
It has also been attempted. LGBT club nights WAR and FAG that both temporarily existed in Andrew’s Lane Theatre (which is now Hangar) would have Britney Spears themed nights every now and then. The place would be packed to the rafters with 18-year-old kids who wanted to hear nothing but Britney songs for the night.
12. She reminded us that celebrities are real people
When Britney Spears was sixteen she was flung into the public eye in a way that few people before her ever had been. At the time (and for many years later), she was the worlds biggest pop star and whether or not she had expected such success, she never could have anticipated the way that paparazzi culture would change.
Perhaps it was the increased popularity of the internet and the birth of huge gossip websites that needed new headlines every hour (as opposed to the magazines beforehand that had provided gossip weekly – now celebrities had no time to breathe).
The thirst for photos of celebrities getting up to the most mundane activities led to photographers becoming more intrusive than ever before.
Being followed and judged on your every move by up to 80 photographers at a time is going to have a huge toll on your every day life.
It’s not hard to understand why it damaged not only Britney’s mental health, but the mental health of many young female celebrities during the mid 00s.
In her NBC interview above, her capability as a parent is called into question over and over and frankly, it appears as if the interviewer is trying to tear her to shreds. He pushes on despite the fact that she is crying and clearly upset by his inappropriate questions.
He ignores her when she states that all first-time parents have slip-ups, mistakes and accidents (which they do) and she adds that the vast majority of parents (luckily) don’t have 80 photographers following them and distracting them from every single angle every time they step outside of their houses.
We all witnessed her public breakdown, her shaving her own head on that Friday night in February 2007, her flailing an umbrella at paparazzi.
What we weren’t aware of was that she was fighting an addiction to prescription medicine that left her at risk of losing custody of her children to Kevin Federline.
Britney Spears did not shave her head for the laugh. She allegedly shaved her head to prevent samples of her hair being taken for drug testing that would make her lose her kids.
The whole situation is tragic and a real shame, but you really can’t help but admire Britney for coming back from it and making it to where she is today.
Since the incident she got help and even today you can see that she sincerely wants to live her life like anybody else.
Since 2007, her father has had complete control of her finances and will continue to control her spending indefinitely to prevent anything like this occurring ever again. Britney’s happier than ever to be living like this and not having to worry about creating #1 singles every time she makes music.
After 22 consecutive singles that had gone gold at the very least, she was completely burned out and had been pushed a lot further than many 26-year-olds ever will be.
We should all be thankful that Britney Spears is still with us today and learn a big lesson from how much we expect of individuals.
She had never been in a girl-group or a pop band, she was completely alone in her experience. Nobody before hand really knew what she was going through. For her to make it out of that situation and get to the pretty healthy place that she’s in today, is probably the most important reason why Britney Spears is still the best.
