ZAYN MALIK HAS announced via a statement that he’s leaving One Direction.

 I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.

The announcement was made via the band’s Facebook page:

One Direction have been together since 2010, when they came third in The X Factor.

Internet meltdown is predicted in the wake of this news, which has been rumoured for several weeks.

Fans of the band, which now consists of Harry, Niall, Louis and Liam, are understandably keening and wailing:

Liam from One Direction tried to joke about Zayn leaving, but fans were NOT ready>
