Waterford IT celebrated the birthday of its oldest student in the loveliest way

Tom Boyle, a law student, turned 79 earlier this week. <3

YOU’RE NEVER TOO old to follow your dream, as this 79-year-old student at Waterford Institute of Technology proves.

Tom Boyle, a father of seven from Co Wexford, is currently studying Law at WIT – he enrolled this September after spending over 20 years working as a taxi driver.

When he turned 79 earlier this week, lecturer Deirdre Adams decided to throw him a party with a cake and a huge chorus of Happy Birthday from his fellow students:

“I’m a bit emotional, the kindness is overwhelming. From the first day, everyone has been so welcoming,” Tom said of the surprise.

His wife of 50 years, Phyllis, told WIT that he had wanted to return to education for quite some time:

He has always said he wanted to go back and I tell him: Follow what you want to do. I always support him… He really is living the dream.

And how does Tom get on with his younger classmates? Very well, actually. Fellow student Sarah Duant Smyth said:

Tom is the loveliest, warmest gentleman, who would help anyone out. You might think with younger people there would be a divide, but he brings them all together.

Our hearts.
